Randall Stark Beach
Author of Shadow Child: My Life as a Healthy Sibling to Chronic Disease
Randall S. Beach has lived as a sibling to a diabetic brother for over thirty-seven years, and is intimately familiar with the challenges and joys of being part of a family impacted by chronic childhood disease. Randall was born in Plattsburgh, New York, a small city just thirty miles from the US/Canadian border, in the early 1970s. His family of three was soon increased to four with the birth of his younger brother Jonathan. At the age of four, Jonathan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, a chronic, childhood disease. That diagnosis changed everything for the small family and deeply impacted Randall’s life.
Randall attended Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he was a political science major and graduated with honors. His honors thesis at Union adopted a unique view of individual and group politics, providing a comparative analysis of the successful survival traits of individuals imprisoned in Nazi Concentration Camps, Stalin’s Gulags and American soldiers fighting the Vietnam War.
After Union College, Randall attended Boston University School of Law, where he was an active member of the school’s Review of Banking and Finance Law. Following graduation from law school, Randall was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1998. Throughout nearly twenty years, Randall’s legal practice has focused on commercial transactions and economic development. He is the author of many legal articles in national, state and local publications, and his work has been presented in Congressional Testimony.
When not practicing law or writing, Randall is busy working at Murray’s Fools Distilling Company, a craft distillery Randall founded with his wife, Sarah, in 2015. He enjoys traveling, having spent time in much of Europe, China and, most recently, Scandinavia, as well as spending time in the Adirondack Mountains. Randall resides in Schenectady, New York with Sarah and his two children, Tristan and Colby.
